Traveling with small pets is doable and fairly easy. The bigger the animal, the more complicate. Many airlines have restrictions, so you need to do your homework.

Be certain that you

1. Let AOSR travel agent that you are traveling with a pet. The travel agent will need details like weight and breed.

2. See your vet many months before coming to be certain your have appropriate paperwork. You might need a blood test (not just a vaccination) proving that your friend does not have rabies. Most animals must also be microchipped.

3). You will also need an international pet passport! Ask your vet how to proceed with that. You will also need an approved pet carrier.

4). It's important to note, Italy does not have common apps like Rover etc for dog walking or pet sitting. Consider this when moving with your pets.

Once in Rome, you will quickly learn that the Romans are crazy about dogs. They will stop you and ask you questions and want to kiss your dog. It's a good chance to practice some basic Italian and meet people.

Dogs are welcome almost everywhere and Italy (except most grocery stores). You can bring them to most restaurants or public places. You'll also notice that owners are very knowledgeable about dogs, and will often ask if your dog is male or female before allowing their dog to sniff or make contact.
