Arranging Your Travel
Getting to Rome
PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE YOUR OWN PLANE TICKETS! You will not be reimbursed if you purchase your own tickets. You will be contacted by a representative from the travel agency that the school uses for your airline tickets. The agency will arrange your economy air travel from your current address in the U.S. to Rome, unless otherwise agreed upon in writing with the Head of School.
The New Faculty Orientation is usually during the third week in August. You must have your Work Permit (Nulla Osta) and Work Visa before the travel agent can arrange for your ticket. You should plan to arrive in Rome a few days before the New Faculty Orientation, but the school will communicate the exact date to you. The school will arrange for you to be met at the airport by an AOSR representative and/or a trusted private driver. He/she will have an AOSR sign with your name on it.
If you are moving directly into an apartment upon arrival in Rome, be sure you have the exact address and clear arrangements made with your landlord beforehand to obtain the keys. Please also alert the school in advance so they can communicate the address to the driver. If you do not have an apartment, you will be taken to the local B&B, (B&B Iannus) close to the school. For those of you who have not secured a place to live prior to arrival in Rome, the school will pay for a room for you (and your dependents) at the local B&B for up to maximum of ten days (nine nights) while you look for a place to live. Please note, this is a low key B&B. Breakfast is not provided (though there are "snack" breakfast items and coffee machine), but the location is walking distance (5 min) to the school.
Meals are on your own, except for the specified dinners during orientation week. Lunch will be provided by the school during the orientation week.
Rome in August: Keep in mind that much of Italy is in low gear during the month of August. Be aware that the few days before and after the week of August 15 “Ferragosto,” an Italian national holiday, almost everything is completely shut down in the city. Please also be prepared for hot temperatures (around 35-40 degrees C daily) and lots of humidity.
IMPORTANT: Once you receive a work visa in your passport, your first trip to Europe MUST be Italy and therefore Rome. As soon as you arrive in Rome, you will be required to complete the next step of your hiring process at the immigration office to sign your labor contract.
If you are planning on spending some vacation time in any other country in Europe before you begin your employment at AOSR, you must do this BEFORE you obtain your visa, fly back to the USA, and the depart using the school issued plane ticket.
