Cars and Transport
School Busses
Most teachers choose to take the school bus that picks up and drops off teachers in various neighborhoods. The AOSR Bus Coordinator, Valerio, helps facilitate transportation. Before renting a place, you should speak to him about transportation in the area and where the nearest school bus pick up will be. You can email him at vaureli@aosr.org to make sure that a faculty bus will stop in your neighboorhood.
Public Transport
Public transport can be somewhat unreliable and patience may be needed. The three main bus lines that go to AOSR are the 301, 223 and the 201.
The 301 will take you dowtown to Pizza Augusto Imperatore, the 201 will take you to Mancini which is a bus hub where you can either hop on the tram to Piazza del Popolo, or transfer to another bus, and the 223 goes directly to Termini station.
€ 1.50 ticket is valid for 100 minutes after first stamping; on the subway it is worth a single ride, (but you can transfer to another metro line with the same ticket, as long as you don't exit the station/turnstiles). YOU MUST VALIDATE the ticket upon entrance to metro or on the bus in the yellow machine. There are ATAC employees who will fine you if they catch you without a validated ticket.
You can purchase a 35 euro monthly pass during the first 5 days of the month from a tabacchi (tabacco store).
250 per year goes a full year from when you buy it and those need to be purchased from the station called Lepanto. You will need to bring your passport and a passport photo with you.
Your Own Car
A car is certainly not needed in Rome. If you choose to own a car, know that parking is an issue. If you do not have a EU Driver License, you will need to get an International Drivers License. In theory, your US Drivers Lic and International Drivers License must be replaced with an EU License after you have been a resident in Rome for 1 year.
Taxis
An efficient but expensive way to get around Rome. Know that most of the time, you cannot flag down a taxi. You need to go to an official Taxi stop or use an app like it Taxi.
Scooters and Motorcycles
This is a very popular mode of transport. Be aware that it is a dangerous mode of transport. If you have an EU license, there are many apps where you can rent scooters to easily get around.
Walking and Cycling
Walking is a great way to get around- just watch out for dog poop!
Cycling is another way to get around. There is a nice bike path along the river and a few more bike paths in town. It is not very well developed here and you need to be very careful in traffic. Sunday is a great day for recreational cycling as the traffic is lite.
